Terrea offers a fresh perspective on the music of the middle East, particularly Iran, by shedding new light on its rich musical traditions. Their aim is to redefine the narrative surrounding the music of this region.
The Trio strives to create a new way of thinking about the music of this region, one that is not bound by preconceived notions. They resist being categorized with politically charged labels such as “exotic” or “foreign” and seek to break away from the existing paradigm.
At the core of their project is the remarkable instrument known as the “Claviton,” built by Georg Vogel, offering 31 tones per octave. This instrument serves as a highlight, enabling thecomposer and pianist, Amir Ahmadi, to apply a tuning system he developed based on Iranian and Arabic music.
This groundbreaking approach allows for the creation of a polyphonic texture in his compositions, that evoke the melodic vocabulary of Iranian and Arabic music, seamlessly intertwining these elements in a modern jazz style while still honoring the traditional aspects.
Adding to the trio’s musical prowess is the inclusion of Sarvin Hazin, an experienced classical violinist and Kamancheh Player with a deep expertise in Iranian Dastgah music. Her contributions further enhance the ensemble’s sound, infusing it with her profound mastery of the intricate techniques and emotional nuances of this genre. Additionally, the trio benefits from the talents of Anna Maria Niemiec, a cellist specializing in contemporary music. Her contributions expand the trio’s sonic palette, pushing the boundaries of their artistic expression and taking their sound to new levels.
